Cancer Screening

Cancer screening & ColoAlert® bowel cancer testing

Catch it early. ColoAlert® is a next-generation at-home bowel cancer test — more sensitive than the standard NHS FIT test, with a GP reviewing every result.

What it is

ColoAlert® is a next-generation stool DNA home test. It looks for both occult (hidden) blood and tumour DNA, which is why it's more sensitive than blood-only tests. A GP reviews every result. It's available UK-wide by post, with no clinic visit needed.

Why it matters

Bowel cancer is the UK's 4th most common cancer and the 2nd leading cause of cancer death. Caught at the earliest stage, more than 90% of people survive five years — at the latest stage, fewer than 10%. Early disease is usually symptomless, which is exactly why screening saves lives.

FAQs

Common questions

How accurate is ColoAlert® compared with the NHS FIT test?
ColoAlert® detects around 85% of colorectal cancers, compared with roughly 65–70% for FIT alone, and is better at picking up advanced adenomas. It is not a replacement for colonoscopy.
Who is it for?
Adults 40+, anyone with a family history, those with a prior negative FIT but ongoing concern, people reluctant to have a colonoscopy, and 50–60s before NHS screening begins. It is not for people with current red-flag symptoms — those need to see a doctor promptly.
How long do results take?
Typically 7–14 working days from when the laboratory receives your sample.
What happens if my result is positive?
A positive result is not a cancer diagnosis. The next step is usually a colonoscopy. Dr Tang reviews your result and arranges the referral.
Is it available on the NHS?
No — ColoAlert® is a private test. We can advise on screening intervals (around every 2 years on average, or annually if you're higher-risk).
