Bowel cancer screening at home: ColoAlert® explained

Bowel cancer is highly treatable when caught early — which is exactly why screening matters. Here's how at-home stool DNA testing works and where it fits.

Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK, but also one of the most treatable when found early. The challenge is that early disease often has no symptoms — which is why screening, not waiting for symptoms, saves lives.

FIT vs. stool DNA testing

The standard NHS test (FIT) looks for tiny amounts of blood in a stool sample. It's valuable and free — but blood isn't always present, especially with early changes. Stool DNA tests such as ColoAlert® additionally look for genetic markers shed by abnormal cells, which can improve sensitivity for detecting cancers and some advanced growths.

How an at-home test works

  • Your kit is posted to your door.
  • You collect a small sample at home and send it to the lab.
  • Your results are reviewed, and our GP helps you understand what they mean and any next steps.

Who might consider it

People who want added reassurance, those with a family history, or anyone who'd value a more sensitive option than FIT. Screening is not a substitute for seeing a doctor about symptoms — any bleeding, persistent change in bowel habit, or unexplained weight loss should be assessed promptly.

Our founder, Dr. Chun Tang, brought ColoAlert® to the UK after losing his father to bowel cancer — early detection is personal to us. If you'd like to talk it through, we're here.
